Softball Legend Jennie Finch Runs The NYC Marathon For A Cause
Jennie Finch on her charitable NYC Marathon run, her new book “Throw Like A Girl”, life after softball, and how to improve the (less than fantastic) Forbes softball team. Is there anything she can’t do?
Is this a good essay?
Softball, my like
As the front window of our one tale house, in Wildomar, lay shattered in a thousand pieces, my mom runs in only to shout, “Place that down!” I was only about three at the time, but it was the first time I had ever held a softball bat, but unquestionably not the last.
I don’t retract ever really wanting to play a sport, but on my fourth birthday, my dad chose that he wanted me to play softball for Menifee Valley Girls T-ball. I still dredge up the day so well, even at such a young age. As soon as I stepped out onto that newly cut landscaped field, with my brand-new equipment, I knew I had fallen in like-with softball.
I had no thought how to play the game, let alone how to throw a ball. During the first few practices, my head was spinning out of hegemony trying to gather how to run the bases, catch a slowly-hit grounder, and other hard-at-the-time plays. And I didn’t like the sport, not at all. But I wedged to it because the Rose family isn’t quitters. My family has always told me to never give up. And I never did, which really helped me throughout life, too, and not just on the field. Thank God or I wouldn’t be everywhere I am today.
Rose 2
I’m now fifteen years ancient and still struggling from an excruciatingly painful back injury, still play softball to this day. Doesn’t matter if I’m in pain or not, nothing can keep me from playing the game I like. My coaches, and my teammates, mean a lot to me, probably because they impart the same appeal as me. Not only that, but they help me when I don’t quit get a certain drill. They help me cope with problems and have the ability to help me to gain my strength not only physically, but mentally as well. Also, they guide me to pursue my future in getting a softball scholarship and maybe one day playing in the 2016 Softball Olympics in Denmark.
I like softball, period. And I couldn’t imagine my life without it. The blood-tingling, hair-raising, mind-blowing, yet strenuous and challenging game is on my mind, twenty-four-seven. It has made me a surpass person in ways only some could come to realize. It has taught me that I’m not always the center of attention, life’s not always going to go the way I want it to, to stand up for myself, strength, leadership, and above-all, courage. It has taught me most not to dread anything; to just overcome that dread. And as a cunning man once stated, “Never let the dread or striking out keep you from playing the game,” or how I interpret it: Embrace stoppage as a learning tool of life. Gather from your mistakes. It keeps me intact on my everyday challenges. So, basically, everyone was place on Earth for a reason. Everyone was bound to do something with their life. Mine just so happens to play an exquisite game of pure bravery and knowledge only few could deal with: Softball, my like.
ANY EXTRA IDEAS/HELP WOULD BE GREAT!

Why does the IOC limit the number of sporting events (disciplines)?
I have been trying to figure out why the IOC limits the number of generous disciplines to be featured in the Olympics. I read their charter and it doesn’t give reasons for their reasoning behind it, just that they do it and that’s that. While there are many different events included in certain events (i.e. beach volleyball and indoor volleyball are painstaking one discipline; swimming, diving and water polo all fall under the aquatics category), it is silly that baseball and softball are going to have to fight to get their position in the Olympics back in 2012 against the likes of Rugby, Golf, and Karate. So I want to know why everyone can’t join if they meet the required criteria?

Should some of the summer games be moved to winter games to add sports?
In view of the fact that there is a cap on the number of sports that can be in the Olympics, and the summer seems to have an abundance of events, couldn’t they go some summer sports to winter?
Moving some events would allow them to consider reinstating baseball and softball, but also count other events, like American football, rugby, cricket, karate, reinstating tug-of-war, etc.
Many are indoor, so table tennis, boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, judo, and taekwondo could be went easily. Gymnastics could also be went, but I reckon it’s a foremost part of the summer games, so I wouldn’t want that.
What do you reckon?
